Религиозный деятель эпохи "великого пробуждения" [Great Awakening]. В 1738 приехал в Джорджию в качестве миссионера. Стал одним из руководителей кальвинистского методизма - широкого движения внутри кальвинизма, охватившего колонии Новой Англии [New England] в 1730-40-е. Движение носило обновленческий характер, отстаивало религиозную эмоциональность, необходимость религиозной активности личности, возможность достичь спасения с помощью личных поступков и веры
